Talking About You for Hours

"What makes you, you?"

Talking About You for Hours began as part of prompt given by Helen Medland and Tim Harrison of SICK! Festival as part of my Spring 2016 semester at DasArts - the question, "what makes you, you?" I realized that I could not answer the question, but I could talk about the question along with the issues of subjectivity, identity, and the gaze of the other for hours on end.

I devised for myself a performative challenge to make a durational work where I would openly explore the question and the related subjects without ceasing. Members of the public were allowed to join me in discussing the topic and if there were no one sitting with me I would continue to discussion alone. Additionally I explored the creation of subjectivity and identity through media by openly recording the event through sound and multiple video sources as well as live streaming over YouTube and the app Periscope which brought in a totally different public to the event. Talking About You for Hours does not seek to answer the question at hand, but instead open up the ideas above through my own personal reflections as well as those of the members of the public while simultaneously presenting the performance through multiple perspectives or gazes of the other.
